about

"Here's a handsomely wrapped artifact from two solitary space-rock shut-ins. Octal is Jeff Reilly of Magnog, and his contribution is a sinuous slither through a valley sheltered from his other band's gusty blasts. Drekka is Michael Anderson, who overcomes the handicap of his dreadful handle by offering intriguing music. "Posterity" sinks like the pearl in Prell through strata of feedback, sullen beats and down-the-hall vocals. "Visible Trace II" is a welcome postcard from the hiss factory.

- Bill Meyer, Magnet Magazine Nov/Dec 1998

Another single from 1998. This was the very first Bluesanct release on vinyl!

This one... was a little difficult for me to get ready. I was just getting used to 4-tracking and mixing when this was recorded, and this is pretty evident, hah.

The digital re-issue of this single has been remastered from the original DAT. I was able to tame the snowstorm and lower the vocals in the mix to a point where I am much more confident about putting it up on the site.

The Drekka side of the single contains an alternate version of "Posterity is Futile" to the one that appears on the "Exactioning" EP. The lyric is from an advert that I read on the bus to work every morning for a few weeks and got stuck in my head.

The beat is a slowed down track by David Kristian. At the time, Scott Cortez and I were exploring incorporating jungle and breakbeat tracks into lovesliescrushing. We would bring home all the latest white label 12"'s and record them to DAT. I am not sure what track of his this was from originally. I don't think I ever bothered to contact David to ask permission or tell him about it. If you are reading this, I am sorry David!

The lyrics to the other Drekka track "Visible Trace II", were written while living in Fairbanks, AK.

On the other side, we have Octal; solo project of Jeff Reilly from Magnog. I was a huge fan of the first Magnog album on Kranky and reached out to Jeff to do a split... which he agreed to with his Octal moniker.

To be honest, I don't remember much of the details surrounding this single. I know the sleeve was beautifully screen printed at Crosshair Press in Chicago and that it sold well via Carrot Top and Cargo US/UK.

Posterity may be futile, but it helps me remember even the small bit of the past that I can. And there is no harm in keeping our histories out there for those who might be interested in exploring.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

The facts:

BlueSanct Musak presents its first vinyl release, after over a decade of the best in the lowest-fi-pho-hi-fi magnetic bliss and hiss, w/ a seven-inch single split between our own DREKKA and OCTAL (being Jeff Reilly of MAGNOG fame).

Jeff Reillys MAGNOG has released two CDs on KRANKY, w/ a third on the way. And OCTAL already has a cd on SONIC BOOMs SPACE AGE RECORDINGS, w/ a second next year (this is OCTALs first vinyl release). KRANKY sells many cds on its name alone, never mind the fact that the drone kids love MAGNOG, and the OCTAL cd sells very well... as well. His track, entitled Sun Filters Thru Snow is a seven minute epic that rivals any in the modern psyche field.

DREKKA is Michael Anderson's moniker, and though he's a new kid on the block, he has obtained some acclaim already. And not only for his work in music, but for his designs as well, having designed sleeves for ROY MONTGOMERY and FLYING SAUCER ATTACK/JESSAMINE (both for ENRAPTURED) as well as designing all the sleeves for BlueSanct Musak, which he owns and runs. His two tracks are entitled Posterity is Futile and Visible Trace II. The first being a new one w/ beats and drones ala BOWERY ELECTRIC, and the second being an older on penned in Alaska a couple years ago... a quiet acoustic one.

The selling points:

Its LIMITED to 500 copies on gorgeous GREY vinyl, with sleeves printed at Crosshair Press, Chicago.
MAGNOG are an established band in the genre.
DREKKA will be doing extensive touring and publicity for its releases, with a full-length CD out on BSM in Feb/March98.

Some press on Drekka:

Similarities to HALFER TRIO and FLYING SAUCER ATTACK abound, yet each stroke of genius performed [by DREKKA] is owned by an original vision of beauty.- MILK summer97

... enjoy it for the nice dark atmospheric qualities. I like the SWANS-like darkness and repetitive style.- Carl (of WINDY & CARL)

The music is... well, its very... hmm... I definitely hear some... at times, its... wait a second, I hear footsteps...- SOLO DRONE, spring96

[DREKKA] somehow has a really visual aspect, so its easy to picture an atmosphere while letting yourself slide into his musical landscape.- a-MAZE-zine, winter97
