about

from the original press sheet:

‘From Rhode Island, THE IDITAROD play a minimal kind of bleak psychedelic folk that owes as much to the somnambulism of Bristol’s MOVIETONE as it does to early 70s private press semi-legends like STONE ANGEL and CAEDMON’ - The Wire, David Keenan.

With the success of last year’s ‘The Ghost, the Elf, the Cat and the Angel’ (2002,Bluesanct), ‘The River Nektar’ (THE IDITAROD’s debut, originally released in 1998 on Hub City) has finally had a proper mastering and is embellished with 9 additional tracks, nearly doubling it’s original length. These additions are culled from out-of-print singles and outtakes, including two brilliant covers: BRIAN ENO’s ‘The Fat Lady Of Limbourg’ and DONOVAN’s ‘The Lullaby Of Spring’.

‘Nektar‘s sparse, quiet-indie-pop set the framework for the psych folk to come with ‘The Ghost...’ ‘Maybe this is what EMPRESS would sound like if they had a record collection full of INCREDIBLE STRING BAND and SANDY DENNY records - beautiful, naive and utterly captivating.’ - Melody Bar, Gayle Brogan

‘Jeffrey Alexander’s transparently lo-fi acoustic guitar, mix of (mostly) female and some male vocals, with words by Carin Wagner, sounding like dark internal musings, full of suspense, mystery and ghostly tender universal human frailty. Makes me think of the stuff Kath Bloom did with Loren Mazzacane Connors, also: Hood, Jandek, Mecca Normal, and Alastair Galbraith. Quiet details and tangible moments, as eloquent and ephemeral as a sigh.’ - Dream Magazine, George Parsons
