about

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

Timesbold hails from Brooklyn NY. With a fistful of songs and more instruments than hands, the band combines lyrical images compiled by lead vocalist Jason Merritt (a.k.a. Whip) with fittingly fractured instrumentation composed by Max Lichtenstein and Dan Goebel. Together they conjure up an atmosphere of tone, texture and noise using an arsenal that includes mellotron, harmonium, banjo, vibraphones, bowed saw, lo-fi electronics, old vinyl and much more...

Merritt is not seeking anything as lofty as enlightenment with his work, but simply a playful re-arrangement of the world that's already out there to see, feel and hear. Observations jotted on scraps of paper and book spines- syllables and phrases- are transcended by the only possible means available; that of melody and melancholy. Melancholy is the even keel; not too jovial and not too depressing. It is the great general discomfort. It is using a fishing rod to fly a kite over the ocean so far that you can't see it any more, can't reel it in. You just have to cut it loose.

The lazy reviewers will doubtless name-drop Will Oldham, Jason Molina and other contemporary indie/country/folk songwriters. But any discerning listener will clearly notice that Timesbold's creations find their own way rather than someone else's.

'Timesbold don't shy away from introducing pianos, synthesizers, strange production techniques and lush vocal harmonies, -and- they're not afraid to rock out, if the song calls for it. Also, unlike their indie/country/folkie peers, they seem more interested in production, crafting spacious and epic soundscapes, replete with soaring strings and creepy minor key washes, with a more isolated and bleak country vibe: crackling campfires, broken hearts, wintery chills, bitter loneliness.' - Aquarius Records, May 2002

Timesbold’s first release was a 7" called "Sewn In Seams". The British magazine Record Collector dubbed it a Single Of The Month in March of 2001. The band’s first full-length disc "Timesbold" was released in Belgium and Holland in April of 2002. US release of the disc for Bluesanct is April 22nd, 2003.

Aquarius Records newsletter review:
"We had never heard of these folks until AQ fave Greg Weeks came to town with his traveling musical revue (Timesbold in tow) and I have to say I was BLOWN AWAY by this band. How a band could be this good, sound this polished and self assured, share so many traits with more 'popular' and 'hip' indie bands, and still remain completely unknown is baffling to me. The closest reference points are probably Palace or Songs: Ohia, due in no small part to the gorgeous vocals: cracking and emotive, full and rich. Stunning. But unlike those bands' purposeful minimalism and spare instrumentation, Timesbold don't shy away from introducing pianos, synthesizers, strange production techniques and lush vocal harmonies, -and- they're not afraid to rock out, if the song calls for it. Also, unlike their indie/country/folkie peers, they seem more interested in production, crafting spacious and epic soundscapes, replete with soaring strings and creepy minor key washes. Think Jason Molina, Will Oldham or Neil Young singing for the Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev, but with a more isolated and bleak country vibe: crackling campfires, broken hearts, wintery chills, bitter loneliness. So fucking great. First time in a LONG time I've managed to just stumble on to a band this good. So recommended."
